Sofa beds create their sleeping surface in different ways. A separate mattress allows seating and sleeping to be assessed as distinct functions; other designs use parts of the sofa as the bed. Neither construction should be chosen by its name alone.
Check the surface, joins and specification
Lie in your normal sleeping position and try the full usable width. Ask what supports the mattress or cushions and whether joins between sections can be felt. Mattress thickness is only one specification: it does not independently establish suitability for a particular sleeper.
A practical check before choosing
- Request the mattress or sleeping-surface construction for the selected version.
- Ask whether the mattress can be replaced and which sizes are compatible.
- Before buying a topper, check storage space and the mechanism’s restrictions.

The two-seat ELBEKO catalogue specifies a 200 × 140 cm sleeping surface. Overall width with arms A/B/C is 197/207/182 cm. The small two-seat version is a different configuration with a 200 × 120 cm sleeping surface. A 14 cm mattress is described; confirm the selected specification in your order.

The three-seat Copenhagen Sleeping measures 230 × 104 × 91 cm overall. Its description mentions a sleeping function, an upholstered back and removable seat- and back-cushion covers. The 230 cm overall width must not be treated as the sleeping-surface dimension.

A common buying question
Does a thicker mattress automatically mean better sleep?
No. Assess construction, support and personal comfort. A thickness figure cannot replace trying the bed and checking the manufacturer’s intended-use information.
